The Role of Anodes with a Coated Hull

A vessel's primary defence against corrosion is its hull coating (blacking). In a perfect world, a brand-new coating would provide a complete barrier, meaning anodes would not be required. However, in reality, no coating remains perfect. From the moment of launch, the coating is subject to inevitable scrapes, impacts, and general wear that create breaches in this protective barrier.

Anodes are fitted with the full expectation that the coating will be compromised. They act as an essential secondary defence, remaining largely dormant when the coating is intact but activating to protect the exposed steel at these points of failure. The calculator's logic is built on this principle:

  • A scientific calculation first determines the baseline weight of magnesium required for a perfectly coated hull.
  • A 15% safety factor is then added to this baseline. This creates a practical target weight, providing the extra protection needed to account for the inevitable paint damage that will occur during the service cycle.
  • The anode layout is determined by a tiered rule system based on boat length, ensuring a practical and efficient fit-out reflecting standard boatyard practice.
    • For boats up to 60ft: The layout is capped at a maximum of 4 anodes per side.
    • For boats over 60ft (up to 70ft): The layout is fixed at 5 anodes per side.
  • The final recommendation is the smallest commercially available anode size that meets this higher, safer target weight for the specified layout.
