Understanding Engine Oil

Viscosity is a measure of an oil's resistance to flow. It's the most prominent feature on the label, shown as a grade like 15W-40.

The first number with 'W' (Winter): This indicates how easily the oil flows at low temperatures. A lower number (e.g., 10W) means the oil is thinner when cold, providing better lubrication and reducing wear during engine start-up.

The second number: This indicates the oil's viscosity at high operating temperatures (100°C). A higher number (e.g., 40) means the oil remains thicker and more protective when the engine is hot.

For most inland and coastal marine diesel engines in the UK, a 15W-40 grade is a very common and suitable choice, offering a great balance for our climate.

This classification tells you the performance level and type of engine the oil is designed for.

API (American Petroleum Institute): For diesel engines, this code starts with a 'C'. You will often see specifications like API CC, CF, CG-4, or CH-4. The second letter denotes the performance standard; the further down the alphabet, the more recent the standard. It is not always best to use the newest standard in an older engine, as they were designed for a different oil chemistry. Check your manual!

ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association): The European equivalent. An 'E' rating (e.g., ACEA E7) indicates oil for a heavy-duty diesel engine, meaning one designed for sustained high loads, like in a lorry or a boat. For ACEA 'E' ratings, a higher number is generally backwards-compatible. For example, an oil meeting ACEA E7 is also suitable for an engine that requires the older ACEA E5 specification.

Mineral Oil: Refined from crude oil, it's the traditional choice. It provides excellent lubrication for the vast majority of marine engines and is more affordable.

Synthetic Oil: A man-made oil offering superior performance at extreme temperatures and longer life. While excellent, it is often unnecessary for the typical leisure marine diesel and is significantly more expensive.

The Risk of "Bore Glazing" (Older Engines):

Inland marine engines often run at very low RPMs under light loads. Using a modern synthetic or excessively high-spec oil prevents the piston rings from bedding in or seating properly, causing the cylinder bores to "glaze" over. This leads to a loss of compression, blue smoke, and burning oil. For most older engines (like BMC, Perkins, older Volvos), a high-quality mineral oil is the strictly recommended choice.

What About Mixing Oils?

  • Mixing Brands: It is generally safe to mix different brands of oil as long as they meet the same viscosity and quality specifications.
  • Mixing Mineral and Synthetic: This should be avoided. While it will not cause immediate engine damage in an emergency top-up, the different chemical compositions and additive packages can conflict, leading to reduced performance and protection. Always stick to one type.
  • Best Practice: For topping up, always try to use the same brand and type of oil that is already in your engine.

This is a common question. The short answer is: yes, you often can, but you must ignore the marketing on the bottle and focus purely on the technical specifications.

What to Look For:

  • The Right Specification: The oil MUST have a diesel specification. Look for an API 'C' rating (e.g., CF, CH-4) or a European ACEA 'E' rating for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (HDEO). Avoid oils that only have an API 'S' (petrol) rating.
  • Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDEO): The best automotive substitutes are oils designed for lorries, tractors, and vans (e.g., Shell Rimula, Mobil Delvac). These engines operate under similar conditions to a marine diesel.
  • Correct Viscosity: It must match your manual's recommendation, which is commonly 15W-40.

The Key Difference:

Dedicated "marine" oils contain an enhanced package of anti-corrosion and anti-rust additives specifically designed to protect an engine that lives in a damp, often salt-laden environment and may sit unused for long periods.

Recommendation:

For an inland waterways boat in a dry bilge that is used regularly, a high-quality HDEO from an automotive shop is a perfectly acceptable and economical choice. For a sea-going boat, the extra cost of a dedicated marine oil is a worthwhile investment for long-term protection against corrosion.

How to Check Your Oil Level

For an accurate reading, run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, then switch it off and wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to settle. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth, re-insert it fully, then pull it out again to check the level. It should be between the 'MIN' and 'MAX' marks.

Always Change the Oil Filter

It is very important to change the oil filter every time you change the oil. A dirty filter can no longer effectively remove contaminants, and in some cases can get so blocked that it forces dirty oil to bypass the filter media entirely. A new filter is a small cost for ensuring your new oil stays clean.

Safe Disposal of Used Oil

Used engine oil is a hazardous waste. Never pour it down a drain or onto the ground. Pour the old oil into the container your new oil came in. Most local authority recycling centres have specific facilities for disposing of used engine oil safely and for free.
